RARA-AVIS: Re:Chandler

Wed, 30 Sep 1998 15:47:26 -0500 It looks like these days many of us find ourselves thinking about
Chandler - perhaps it's the change of seasons. How about putting some
Chandler on the reading list? I would suggest short stories, for example
_The Simple Art of Murder_, my favorite collection of hardboiled stories
by anyone. Although I'm sure most subscribers have read Chandler many
times, we can still learn from him and enjoy ourselves.

I was very annoyed when Joyce Carol Oates perpetrated that hatchet-job
in the NYRB (I circulated this privately to some people in the list),
and even more when Robert B. Parker wrote a condescending review on the
NYT Book Review.

In these reviews, I detected a similar resentment to that evidenced by
Ellroy - the children rebelling against the father or some such Freudian
reaction.
