Re: RARA-AVIS: Ellroy, Chandler & DeLillo

Mon, 28 Sep 98 12:06:55 -0400 In defense of James Ellroy's "large ego," I would like to point out that
people who have had the sort of early life he experienced frequently have
a lot of trouble figuring out just what size they are. The self-image
tends to vascilate between being the best or the worst.

This problem is complicated further when drugs and alcohol have been added
to the equation.

I think Ellroy probably has used writing to work his way back from being a
psycho. As such having certain distorted thought patterns are a given and
probably contribute to the power of his prose. For folks like this,
writing becomes a redemptive act as a well literary activity and the
authenticity of the writing can be a touchy subject.

Re" Dellilo

Ellroy was praising Libra in the most complimentary terms during his
self-financed Black Dahlia tour. In fact when Dos Passos was suggested as
a possible influence I thought of the similar feel of America to some of
Dellilo's work, in the sense that they seem to be cultural documents as
well as novels. It is as if he is both writing a novel and preparing a
csae.
