perspective on the seedy side of New York City focusing primarily on the
turn of the century period and the various gangs, slums, brothels and
general corruption that existed then. It will definitely give you a vivid
picture of places such as the "Bowery" or the "Lower East Side".

To whet your appetites I will just give you a short quote from the preface:

"This is a book about New York. It may be briefly described as concerning
the vices and lures that the city proffered to the lower classes in the
nineteenth century, and the streets and alleys that were their theater."

This book is definitely hard boiled.
