Re: RARA-AVIS: The Singing Detective

Mon, 14 Sep 1998 10:50:08 -0800 I picked up a copy of the screenplay for The Singing Detective at a
used bookshop over the weekend. It's a very strange and comical
account (at least in its first 25 pages)of a man named Phillip Marlow
(note the lack of "e")who happens to be in a hospital ward and has
nasty burns all over the skin (psoriasis I believe) with flashbacks
into 1945 to a younger Marlow (maybe with an "e" this time) and a
case (that's all I got so far). But wonderfully intermingled with
the reality of the hospital ward and the fantasy of the 1945
flashbacks are musical numbers, which of course the print cannot
possibly give full justice to (damn good descriptions of those scenes
though).

A question to Peter Walker, Mark Sullivan and any others who have
knowledge of UK. Have you ever seen this? It was to have aired on
the BBC in November/December 1986.

I have been developing (rather early stages) a one-man or one act
play about the tough guy private detective character who occasionally
breaks into song. So naturally I was surprised to hear about this
series and even more surprised to find a copy of the screenplay.
Luckiliy it's nothing like (so far) what I've been working on.

Sorry for the lengthy post, feel free to e-mail me directly if the
group would not be interested in this (it is kind of marshmellow-y
after all).
