A fantastic short series. Apparently abandoned by Westlake because he
felt he had reached a dead end with Tobin. It's worth noting, once
again, that everything Westlake does, he does brilliantly. Probably the
most complete living mystery writer.

For years, Stephen Greenleaf's Tanner has an interesting romantic
relationship with his secretary Peggy. In _Flesh Wounds_, years after
she has left him, she hires him to investigate a question relating to
her soon to be husband. The story rather poignant - and full of old
skeleton's in the closet, as always in Greenleaf (the modern Ross
MacDonald). Few detectives are so consistently depressed as Marsh
Tanner. Nothing ever works out for the man.
