One of the better HB PI series of the '50s was Bart Spicer's
seven
novels about Philadelphia op Carney Wilde. In the
penultimate book in
that series, *The Taming of Carney Wilde*, Wilde pursues a
bank robber
in an insterstate chase. Along the way, he meets and falls
in love
with a violence-hating damsel who "tames" him. In the last
book,
*Exit Running*, they're married. At the end of that book, he
gives up
the successful PI business he's spent the rest of the series
building
up because he loves his wife. - Jim Doherty
