It is not just frowned on "these days." It always has been,
though
obviously not to the same degree. Wanting to avoid looking
too prolific
is the reason Cornell Woolrich invented the "William Irish"
persona and,
at least partly, why Erle Stanley Gardner used the "A.A.
Fair" pseudonym
