I certainly hope that writers don't take ALL their interests
off RARA-
AVIS. One of the great things about this list is that we have
so many
different kinds of fans of HB entering in. And I get really
interested in
discussions, such as one about a year ago on whether first
person HB was
passe. Fred's takes on the different feels of 55K vs. 75K is
a revelation
to me. [For one who can't count, could you approximate those
lengths in
terms of cheap paperback pages?]
It's also good that we aren't uptight that K. Harper can't
joyously
proclaim her rite of comps passing to us. Nice going. Now
which grad
school allows an area in popular fiction? (I wish I coulduva,
myself.)
Of course we can't let KH comment too freely, without due
correction. You
said, about three Flannery O'Connor stories," only "Good Man"
has anything
at all to do with crime."
Wait. You're going to tell me that stealing that poor girl's
artificial
leg was not a crime? ("Good Country People") You may be able
to get that
by your committee, but this is RARA-AVIS. We're a larger
committee.
Cheers,
Bill Hagen
