Tony here. I'm a PhD candidate at Lehigh University and will
hopefully be
following a similar hard-boiled path as the illustrious K.

I don't know if this issue has been put to rest or what, but
Cain got the
title of his wonderful novel(la?) from a code he and his
mailman had. Cain
had sent out a story (not sure it was Postman) and it was
summarily rejected
everywhere. Seems like Cain's postie and he worked out a
code, to save time
and all that, where the former would ring once if a letter
looked like an
acceptance, and twice if it looked like a rejection.
Sounds good to me...
