RARA-AVIS: Long and good. T.J. Parker's Triggerman's Dance

Thu, 10 Sep 1998 21:49:07 -0500 In my previous post I forgot to mention a counterexample to the "padding
effect" commonly observed in hefty mysteries. I am referring to _The
Triggerman's Dance_ by T. Jefferson Parker, a spectacular hardboiled
thriller running 565 pages.

This novel is fully thought-out, with no superfluous material, told in a
spare and dark tone. I highly recommend it. My copy is a Hyperion
paperback from 1996, probably still in print.

Check out also his _Laguna Heat_ , _Little Saigon_, and _Pacific Beat_,
all of them very fine novels. I still have _Summer of Fear_ in my
to-be-read pile. Perhaps when I read that I'll write a little "career
retrospective" of Parker, an excellent author who has not received
enough recognition. There's a special intensity and a deliberateness to
his writing that I think would appeal to raravians (to those who haven't
yet discovered him, of course).
