In a recent post Kathy Harper wrote that:

I would say that "hard-boiled is a question of attitude;
"noir" is a
question of tone or atmosphere, but I think we're on the
same page,
here, Kathy.
BTW good luck on your dissertation, and congrats on getting
this far.
