Reading John Houseman's accounts of working with Chandler,
makes it seem
amazing that Chandler managed to write the screenplays at
all. Chandler
was drinking amazing amounts of alcohol at the time.
My own interpretation of the situation was that he was in a
position where
he couldn't write around his drinking because of deadline
pressure.
