Can't add much, except that the main character is known as
"Killer Mears,"
and leads in the takeover of the death row cell-block.
Description doesn't
mention an attempted break. Preston Foster was Mears in the
first (1932);
since Foster is not listed first in the acting credits, I
would suppose
that Mears is not really the main protagonist of the
film.
At any rate, the allusion certainly doesn't fit Tracy's later
career in
film--which is why, I suppose, we wonder about it in the
1990s.
