Just got back from a trip to Herefordshire, and I was able to
get to
Hay-on-Wye [town of book-shops]--TWICE!
I ended up with three carrier-bags full of goodies.
Here's some of the highlights:
Picked up three Tony Fennelly novels--dunno if they're any
good, but it
was a name I had hanging around in the back of my head.
Got a No Exit hb edition of Raoul Whitfield's _The Virgin
Kills_ three
quid; smells like it's never been opened.
Also found reprints of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane; The
Big Clock;
Night of the Hunter; Nightfall; Treasure of the Sierra
Madre.
Found a brilliant Charles Willeford novel: _The Machine in
Ward Eleven_
(Consul, 1964), under Sci Fi. It's kinda sci fi (I suppose
Catch 22 is
kinda a war book).
Three Leigh Bracketts (sci-fi)
Some great cover-art too: Shake Hands With the Devil shows a
Cagney
look-alike and side-kick perfomring torture or 1st aid on a
screaming
female; Original Sin has an Italian village setting showing a
red-clad
temptress (thigh & cleavage & figure-hugging dress,
natch) luring (or is
it soliciting?) an open-shirted male. Little Ceasars (Ace)
has a so-so
JD cover, but one that at =A31.50 couldn't be left on the
shelf.
Not a single Cornell Woolrich novel in sight though.
I only managed to browse five of the 38 or 39 bookshops (amd
this is a
small border town) in my two half-day trips. Ho-hum--there's
always next
time.
