I've been away for a couple of weeks so how did we get to pick
"Dora Suarez" of all books? I mean don't get me wrong - it is an
incredible book and I don't know anyone who's read it who hasn't been
profoundly effected by it in one way or an other (there is even a
story that one publisher threw up when he read it) - but some
preparation maybe in order. For example anyone who has any strong
feelings about small furry animals should prepare yourselves.
Perhaps, by way of a metaphorical limbering up, it would be useful to
give some thought to our four legged friends. How about the grilled
cat in Dan Kavanagh's "Duffy"? Or, on a lighter and highly
recommended note, the slaughter of the toads and naked encounter with
a camel in Peter Guttridge's hughly funny debut "No Laughing Matter".

Has anyone got any particuarly gruesome pet/animal endings to relate?

If you are interested I have an excellent interview with Derek Raymond
in the UK's number one crime mag, "Crimetime", from Oct 95 - his last
interview before he died and well worth a look. So, FOR UK
SUBSCRIBERS, if you want a copy I'll snail mail one to you
if you e-mail me here.

Continuing with the subject of UK writers, the 'problem' with Timlin
- although Iove his books and they are great - is that he is a series
writer and its hard to pick out any one book as such. But Ted Lewis
has written an acknowledged calssic "Get Carter" which was made
in to a film which is also an acknowledged classic - so plenty to get
into there.

Finally, just in passing, if you happen to come across Manchester
based writer Nic Blincoe he is well worth a look as well. Details an
request.
Also, just one more thing, you could do a lot worse than Charlie
Higgson's "The King of the Ants" - the "lets reduce his brains to
putty" and the "cooked brekfeast" scenes are deliciously gruesome.
And not to mention Mike Ripley's "Angel" books...
P.S Has anyone come acroos the excellent Gwen Butler Insp Coffin
books?
