Re: RARA-AVIS: Haywood's _It's Not A Pretty Sight_

Fri, 21 Aug 1998 16:58:11 EDT Haven't read It's Not a Pretty sight, but generally believe moral lessons
belong elsewhere--F.R. Leavis was wrong. Can you imagine a Tom Ripley with a
moral conscience? Marlowe had a code of ethics but the plots of Chandler's
books never edified morally, thank goodness. A propos of nothing, has anyone
out there read Carol O'Connell's new Judas Child? It knocked my socks off. If
we can accept a broader definition of hard-boiled as simply hard-headed (as in
the OED) then we could include anything obsessional, especially serial-killer
fiction and lots of Ruth Rendell. As a woman, I'd like to be able to discuss
the genre in the broad (pardon pun) sense.
