I don't think it even played here, or if it did, it lasted
about one
showing. I never saw any ads for it, in print or on the tube.
The first
time I ever heard about the film, in fact, was in a review of
the
soundtrack CD, which mentioned it was from a soon-to-be
released detective
film. But somehow I doubt any of the ads mentioned Holmes at
all. It would
scare away all the fourteen year olds (of all ages) who
usually go to
theatres. But anyone who's ever read any of the canon will
spot the clues
immediately. Hell, I haven't read any Holmes for probably
fifteen years,
and I spotted 'em.
But it's not necessary to deconstruct the film to enjoy it.
My wife never
read a Holmes story in her life, and she still thought it was
a hoot. Next
up on the video hit parade: Jackie Brown. If you missed this
one, check it
out.
