Jesse Sublett confirmed my opinion that they are hip, and he knows a bit
about hard-boiled books and music. Many of their songs (especially Jack
Candy, Findley's Motel, The Stopping Off Place) are excellent musical
stories of crime, love gone wrong, revenge, and arson. There is a
Walkabouts website called The Stopping Off Place at
http://www.hooked.net/~cbhall/
where you can listen to a few sound clips, read reviews, etc.

They fall into to sorta a punk/folk/alternative/country category. While
they write a number of their own songs, the covers they do are also
excellent (Neil Young, Patti Smith, Nick Cave, the Carter Family, Nick
Drake, Charlie Rich, Alex Chilton, Townes Van Zandt...).
