Re: RARA-AVIS: Willeford

Mon, 3 Aug 1998 00:52:57 -0700 In the same vein, I'm wondering if anyone has ever painted or photographed
someone calmly reading a newspaper on fire? *Burnt Orange Heresy*
(difficult though it was to find) was a flamin' great read.

I've been lurking for the past few months, but have picked up *I Was Dora
Suarez* -- raw as Vachss, but written a little better, and I just received
*Dark Ride* in the mail.

I haven't read a great deal of crime fiction, but since I found this list
I'm reading a great deal more-- and dammit, it's fun. I've read Thompson
and Chandler, (and I like Vachss despite its literary value)-- but *The
Burnt Orange Heresy* is brilliant. I'm looking forward to reading more
Willeford.

I had to get BOH through interlibrary loan and have since returned it, so I
can't provide a quote, but towards the end of the book Figueras refers to
Joyce's "yesses" and Beckett's "I can't go on. I'll go on." After this he
refers to a bunch of phallic figures-- where does this comes from? Is it
Beckett?

A great list-- thanks.

Tom Olson

Willeford's The Woman Chaser is a real gem (although, as is often with
him, the publisher's title makes very little sense, his own The Director
would have been far more appropriate). I can't believe the movie
described in the book has never been made, although Vanishing Point
comes close.
