<<Boy, I wish the used bookstores around DC were as good as those where
Mario lives; I have yet to find a used vintage Goodis (although I have
colected the John Evans/Howard Brownes). I am happy to have gotten all
of the Black Lizard reprints, plus the recent Midnight Classics (Serpent
Tail) reprint of Blonde on the Street Corner. Maybe they'll do more, I
hope so.>>

I have found Goodis's and many other paperbacks from the fifties and
sixties *precisely* when I haven't been looking for them. One time I
bought an entire box at an auction for $10; it contained nothing but old
Gold Medals, including obscure books by John D. MacDonald, Gault, Dan
Marlowe, and other popular authors of that era. No-one bid but me!
I had gone to this estate auction looking for old woodworking tools,
which were all bid incredibly high by quite a crowd (an old scythe in
very poor shape went for $50). More recently, I found Leigh Bracket's
"An eye for an eye" in absolutely mint condition at a Salvation Army
store - for 50 cents. The funny thing is that I had gone in to donate a
bunch of clothes and assorted junk. Maybe there is justice after all -
or a positive version of an eye for an eye.

I have also found that library sales are a good place to pick up good
old stuff (and newer too, it's amazing how fast a lot of books are
retired and how few donations actually end up in the selves).

It does help a bit to know what's out there, but nevertheless it's hard
on the neck and the eyes to have to look through tables and tables of
stuff.
