>(in reference to Philip Marlowe story collection). John, what >is the title
of that collection, please, and who edited it?

it's called Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. edited by Byron Preiss. has a
different Marlowe story for every year from 1935 to 1959 by different authors
with the unexplained exceptions of 1943, 1949. a complete list of
contributors:

Max Allan Collins. Benjamin M. Schutz. Loren D. Estleman. Joyce Harrington.
Jonathan Valin. Dick Lochte. W.R. Philbrick. Sara Paretsky. Julie Smith.
Paco Ignacio Taibo II. Francis M. Nevins, Jr. Roger L. Simon. John Lutz.
Simon Brett. Robert J. Randisi. Stuart M. Kaminsky. Robert Crais. Edward
D. Hoch. Jeremiah Healy. Ed Gorman. James Grady. Eric Van Lustbader.
Robert Campbell. and concludes with Chandler's own The Pencil.

as one can see, some natural choices and some very odd ones. many of the
stories are excellent. I imagine this would be a hard book for many listers
to pass up if they saw it on a shelf.
it was for me.
