Re: RARA-AVIS: Non-US Writers

Mon, 27 Jul 1998 20:31:49 -0400 (EDT) The discussion of Latin hardboiled reminded me of a great comic, Sinner,
by two Argentinians Jose Munoz and Carlos Sampayo. These stories
feature a former New York cop, in a mythic New York that probably has
more to do with movies than the real city (if I recall correcty, neither
of them had ever been near NYC when they began the series). The Sinner
stories were translated into English and published by Fantagraphics.
They have also done various stories featuring denizens of Sinner's
favorite hangout. Several of these were collected into the book Joe's
Bar by Catalan.

Frank Miller, as usual recognizing hs influences, has been quite open
about his own Sin City's debt to Sampayo's artwork.
