RARA-AVIS: Newbie Intro

Hello, all. I'm new to this list so here's a brief intro. I'm
Cynthia from
the central coast of California and have been a lover of the
(hardboiled and
otherwise) detective fiction genre since my dad gave me The
Murder of Roger
Ackroyd (Agatha Christie) to read when I was twelve (32 years
ago). I've
been lurking for a while but missed the beginning of the
"posting of fiction
on the list" debate. Don't worry; I don't have any fiction to
post. Could
someone let me know how often a book is selected for reading
and discussion
and when the next novel is due? I'm currently reading one of
John
Sandford's "Prey" series with detective Lucas Davenport. I'm
enjoying this
series so far. Is this type of novel appropriate for rara-avis,
or are we
limited to the classics, ala Hammett and Chandler, et. al.? I
look forward
to some good reading and discussion here. PhantomPhan.
