I just finished Gary's book as well and I will be reviewing
it for MYSTERY
NEWS. Phillips likes to give history lessons and teach about
racial
relations in the U. S. He is a good writer, but he does have
sections
where he develops his points of view, sort of like John D.
MacDonald use to
do. His descriptions of L. A. are worth the price of
admission. Monk, his
P. I., is not quite isolated or alienated enough to be really
hard-boiled,
but this is still a tough world that Phillips develops and I
would
encourage others to try him. Best, GWN.
