RARA-AVIS: Two minor questions about _Burnt Orange_

Tue, 30 Jun 1998 20:38:59 -0400 (EDT) There are a couple of little things I don't quite understand, possibly
because I'm too young. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of 1970
America could explain?

First, just before James and Berenice are going to take Debierue to
the drive-in, he asks her if she has any tranquilizers. She says no,
but she does have a Ritalin pill. James pops that and a couple of
Bufferin. What's he doing popping a Ritalin? What was it used for
back then? Now it's handed out to North American kids with attention
deficit disorder, or things that are close enough, and I think it's
supposed to act as an upper in adults.

Second, James buys Berenice a copy of Cosmopolitan in the last hotel
they stay it. The newsstand lady keeps it under the counter, and it
seems it's there because of its racy content. Was that because of the
morals of the state, or was Cosmo considered quite daring back then?
I know they did a centerfold of Burt Reynolds in the nude, but I
thought that was a one-shot deal.
