Here's a Charyn fan. I certainly believe he's one of the finest stylists
working now, and genre has nothing to do with it. I recently read "Dark
Lady of Belorusse," a memoir of his mother. There's a mythopoeic, Damon
Runyanesque quality to it. And if Charyn's mother was anything like how he
depicts her . . . well, it explains a few things about the sorts of
characters he creates. -- Duane
