RARA-AVIS: Books on tape

Sun, 7 Jun 1998 21:42:08 -0400 (EDT) Hello,

I was in the book-on-tape section of one of those monster bookstores
the other day and saw some of Lawrence Block's Bernie Rhodenbarr
series, read by Block. No Scudders. I had a look around and found
most of the Michael Connelly books, but they were read by someone
named Dick Hill. Ellroy's stuff was read by a non-Ellroy. I've heard
Darren McGavin do the Travis McGee books, and Elliot Gould do Marlowe
(both quite enjoyable). The Block tapes was the first time I've seen
an author we talk about doing his own work, though.

Are there any other hardboiled writers who do their own books on tape?
I'd be interested in hearing them, to see what they bring to the
medium. And on a similar note, are there any recordings of people
like Hammett or Chandler doing readings? I got to wondering what
Cornell Woolrich would be like reading one his stories. Probably
pretty weird. I bet Willeford would have done a great job as Hoke.

Bill
