RARA-AVIS: Final Words on Ellroy

Levin, Doug (DLEVIN@DIRECTIMPACT.COM)
Tue, 19 May 1998 16:56:55 -0400 I finally finished _Hollywood Nocturnes_ and thought I would throw in my
last two cents. In the end, I think I liked "Dick Contino's Blues" the
least. Ellroy does well to give himself a little time--even if it's a
short description of two rotting stiffs (as in "Since I Don't Have
You"). I have one final observation that I think has not been made.
Ellroy is nostalgic, as we have noted, but he is also something of a
sentimentalist, I think. Perhaps the combination of hard action and
sentimental ethos give his writing its charm.
