RARA-AVIS: Mike Ripley

Thu, 7 May 1998 08:17:46 -0400 Recently read Mike Ripley's THAT ANGEL LOOK. Not necessarily what I'd call
hard-boiled, but a fun tale. Published by the DO NOT PRESS, which has
released a number of new crime novels. Judging by the FRESH BLOOD
anthologies that Ripley co-edits, he seems to fit into that British New
Wave Crime genre that Russell James and others seem a part of. But THAT
ANGEL LOOK strikes me as more of a FLETCH IN LONDON sort of novel. This is
the first Ripley novel I've read, and the others seem to be out of print.
Anyone else out there familiar with his work? Is the humor elevated over
the crime element in all of his books? -- Duane
