RARA-AVIS: Modern writers, old settings

factor in that. It sounds modern while sounding retro at the same time.

I read a Loren Estleman book set back in the 50s. (EDSEL, I think..) It
worked all right for me. However, I am reluctant to read Robert Skinner's
New Orleans books that are set back in the 30s, mainly because I haven't
liked the covers, the way they are presented to me. And I love New Orleans
books. Dick Lochte used an older New Orleans setting for half of The Neon
Smile (so familiar, that title, and in New Orleans...Hmmm), and while the
place and time were nicely done, I wasn't pulled in by the story.
