Re: RARA-AVIS: Voting? VOTING?????

"procedurals" of a peculiar sort. A great series, regardless of how it's
classified. For that matter, I'm not even sure that Easy Rawlins is a
P.I. - he certainly doesn't know how to be a detective. He's more of a
general hustler who ends up investigating bad crimes that affect his own
life.

Now, Dave Robicheaux is a cop (though he was out of the police for a
while). A cop cannot possibly be a P.I.

For whatever is worth, I voted for:

Easy Rawlins (Mosley)
Scudder (Block)
Nate Heller (Max Collins)
Tanner (Greenleaf)
Nameless (Pronzini)

[I think it was in that order]

with special mention of Estleman and a note on Gores.

It's interesting to see the P.I. genre change both in names and in
popularity as time goes by. In the past decade or so seems to have been
a growth of "crime fiction" and "romance mysteries", with fewer titles
in the pure P.I. subgenre.

By the way, has the avalanche of serial murder stories subsided yet? I'm
quite fed up with this theme, even if it's done brilliantly as it is by
Thomas Harris. Serial murders have been done to death.
