I, too, like Lehane, but I agree that I'm a little tired of the "smart
aleck, moralistic detective-narrator" in his books. I think that's why I
like George Pelecanos, because he tries to do something a little different
with each book. Even though Nick the drunk shows up in three novels, he's a
little different in each one. And the non-Nick books are well-done also. (I
haven't read the last two novels yet, but I really like "Shoedog".)

John Wessell's "This Far, No Further" is also good. And some of David
Lindsey's novels have strong hard-boiled slants -- there's not a lot of
padding, but they can be longish.--Duane
