RARA-AVIS: Hammett's frustration

Mon, 20 Apr 1998 09:39:21 -0400 (EDT) As I recall, there is a passage in The Dain Curse, where the detective
gets angry and says something like, "There're five people dead; this is a
serious matter!" (Obviously the book is not handy.) But I remembered
reading this passage and thinking, "Well, Hammett's worked himself out on
the limb this time and doesn't know what to do next." TDC features the
same damsel in distress in three separate=but-ultimately-linked cases.
The strain of making this task work was showing. He had bitten off more
than he could chew.
