Fri, 17 Apr 1998 13:30:46 -0400 Thanks, Etienne! I look forward to seeing your info.

I'd heard of Le Poulpe already -- I learned about the character and series
from the articles by Brad Spurgeon in Armchair Detective (for anyone
interested, the articles are also available at the Polar Web site -- in
English -- at this URL:

http://www.mygale.org/00/polar/polarweb/misc/spurgeon/index_a.htm

The articles are very informative about the French interest in hard-boiled
and crime writing.)

In fact, I ordered a novel in Le Poulpe series -- LA PETITE ECUYERE A CAFTE

by J.B. Pouy -- earlier this week from Bonder Bookstore in Montreal. I'll
have to
hone my French-reading skills. It's been a few years since I last read
French on a semi-
regular basis.--Duane

@lias seems to be an equivalent idea to LE POULPE, French series which is
involving different authors for each book with the same central character;
but as you pointed rightly @lias is with an amoral angle- that's where it's
separated from LE POULPE. Right again when you cite Fantomas, as it is in
the "feuilleton" tradition of the popular literature.
Both LE POULPE and @lias try to reestablish this kind of popular literature
in the mystery genre, by differnet ways. @lias is definitely more rooted in
this feuilletonesque origin, very *popular* early this century. LE POULPE
just try to make the HB/Noir genre more popular, by trying to interest a
more general public by these novels.
Unfortunately I do not have more information for the moment about @lias
which is a more recent series, created by Serge Quadruppani if I'm not
mistaken.
Quadruppani was also one of the three founders (for the idea and first
novels) of LE POULPE.
About LE POULPE, I'll be finishing one page of introduction for the series
in my web site during this week-end (in the Books section).
Hope this helps.
