As I read Zackel's piece I realized that by 1969 Ross Macdonald
had
written all of his novels except for the last four (or is it
five?) of
them. I reckon he must have had a reputation with the public
and some
favorable reviews long before the conspiracy was hatched,
though I know
little about the critical reception of Macdonald's work during
his
lifetime. Could one of our fedora-ed encyclopedias throw some
light on
this dark and possibly mean avenue of history?
