RARA-AVIS: Re: Highsmith

Sat, 21 Feb 1998 06:40:20 -0800 (PST) As seems to be the general consensus here, I too got about one-third
of the way through before setting it down. I think Bill Hagen hit it
on the head (so to speak) when he wrote that the character seems to
drift. Possibly I'm just a lazy American who needs action to maintain
interest in the story, or is it that a drifting plot needs a firm
character, and vice versa? Bill described Ripley as "protean," and I
think that's quite accurate.

I guess my biggest complaint with the novel was its European-ness. In
general, I don't like to read novels about gentlemen burglars or
gentlemen spies, and I have discovered I don't particularly care for
novels about gentlemen psychopaths, either. I know they exist --
witness Ted Bundy -- but they don't excite my interest.

I'll just sit back and wait for Chester Himes to come up.
