Re: RARA-AVIS: Highsmith/Ripley

Fri, 13 Feb 1998 02:11:34 -0600 (CST) I think the root of Highsmith's genius can be seen in the
psychological development of Ripley from THE TALENTED
MR. RIPLEY to RIPLEY UNDERWATER, where we can
see Ripley's demented self-actualization from a callow
young man whose self-loathing is always bubbling under
the surface to the Ripley of UNDERWATER who has
come to feel a sense of hubris and self congraltory
entitlement, regardless that his life of leisure has been
earned solely though nefarious means.

Ripley actually grew comfortable into his personality disorder as
he went along- thriving. Which is probably the most frighting thing
of all... Without reverting to crass manipulation, Highsmith
devised a means for a reader to actually *gulp* root for
Ripley. Although, this may say more about the reader than
Ripley :)

Anyone, know if Highsmith was working on a last Ripley
prior to her death?
