Hm. How about one of the books from the _Berlin Noir_ trilogy, by
Philip Kerr? Probably the first one, _March Violets_ would be best.
I think I liked that best of the three.

Or if you're looking for one set in a more modern time, too, I
rather liked Martin Cruz's _Gorky Park_ and _Polar Star_; though
they weren't exactly HB, they do have a very HB protaganist (in
the sense that he's a moral person trying to maintain that stance
in an amoral world).
