I think Johnson has never really caught on with the public because his
brutal books tell it like it is - his stuff reads not like fiction but
like a real chronicle of the underworld. Today, there are many mystery
fans who cannot read the novels of James Ellroy because they find them
excessively brutal.

By the way, I agree that he is well worth reading.
