A notable example of an explicitly lesbian protagonist is Howard
Browne's "Halo in Brass". Browne wrote a short introduction for the
Dennis MacMillan reissue, in which he laments the way in which he
treated the topic - but reminds the reader that such unsympathetic views
of homosexuality were prevalent in the forties and that he shared those
views at the time he wrote the book.

By the way, the novel is excellent (I guess this is not news to most
raravians).

P.S. I remember a lesbian character, treated sympathetically in an old
Gault novel from the mid fifties, but for the life of me can't recall
the title. Gault was extremely broad-minded and generally sympathetic
towards ethnic minorities, women, immigrants, and homosexuals - a
notable exception among the hardboiled writers of his day, who as a norm
were about as open minded and respectful of "different" people as the
average American mite whale...
