RARA-AVIS: John's Grill

Wed, 3 Dec 1997 13:16:10 +0900 I went to John's Grill about 10 years ago and ordered the Sam Spade plate
or something with lamb chops, baked potatoes and sliced tomatoes with
coffee. Anyway, we have The Maltese Falcon Society of Japan, which holds
the annual Dashiell Hammett Birthday dinner at the end of May in Tokyo with
the similar menu and a birthday cake. Is John's Grill still selling a
Maltese Falcon necktie?

Well, Don Herron was (or is?) a founder of The Maltese Falcon Society in
San Francisco. I am not sure he still manage the SF chapter, or its
chapter is still active. I once attended the meeting about 10 years ago at
the Rathskeller (sp?). Bruce Taylor was there. Is Don still guide the
Hammett tour every Sunday except in winter? Incidentally Don is the author
of the new Charles Willeford biography from Dennis McMillan. Yes, Don has
written the Dashiell Hammett tour book.

The Dashiell Hammett Society is (or was?) a separate organization. This is
more professional with the membership of writers and scholars, like William
F. Nolan and a famous private eye (whose name I've forgot, sorry).
