RARA-AVIS: Baume's Rush, John's Grill, etc.

Tue, 2 Dec 1997 10:12:23 -0400 I wonder how many fans new to the genre really haven't heard of the old
guard. Seems every new paperback compares the writer to Chandler, Hammett,
Cain or Macdonald, and lately to Leonard, Grafton (if it's a woman), Mosely
(if they're black), Parker, Westlake, etc., etc. I wonder how many people
on this list actually read the old guys when they first came out? I would
assume most of us managed to find the masters eventually, in reprints; why
should the new fans be any different? I reckon anyone with a normal amount
of curiousity and intelligence (like us), would start to wonder, after
twenty or thirty blurbs, who this Marlowe guy was, or what's this Maltese
Falcon they're always talking about?

Speaking of the bird, it seems John's Grill is the place to be. I propose
we hold the first Rara-Avis General Convention there, and then check out
the plaque on Burritt street that reads "On approximately this spot, Miles
Archer, partner of Sam Spade, was done in by...." (well, you know who it
is, or you don't.) After reading your piece, Fred, I realize I too left my
heart in San Francisco. Only thing is, I've never been there...

Anyway, who came up with the line about "the stuff that dreams are made of"?

Was it

a) William Shakespeare
b) Dashiell Hammett
c) John Huston
d) Humphrey Bogart
e) Carly Simon

Both Huston and Bogart seem to have been credited with coming up with it.
Anyone know the real scoop?

(Might be a bit off topic here, but as for the "three strikes and you're
out" law, it seems to me it's right up there with manufacturing more
Band-Aids to prevent people from cutting their fingers. It's treating the
symptons, not the causes. If jailing more people, and harsher penalties
really deterred crime, then (insert name of country here) would be one of
the safest countries in the world. Think about it.)
