RARA-AVIS: Do gangsters fit?

Tue, 25 Nov 1997 20:38:09 +0000 Just to shake the definitional cocktail a little more, let me ask if
"gangster stories" would fit this group. After reading Howard Browne's
excellent gangster novel "Pork City" (Chicago circa 1930, Capone
reigning), I decided to re-read some other classics, notably "The
Godfather". It is dawning on me that there really isn't that much
difference between, say, Ellroy's L.A. Quartet of novels, and Browne's
or Puzo's gangster creations. So, if we admit Ellroy (and, before him,
folks like Burnett, Whitfield, and Paul Cain!), shouldn't we admit
gangster stories in general into the "hardboiled chamber"?
