I think much hard-boiled is noir and the reverse.
But I can also think of hard-boiled that leans
more toward tough action stories that don't have
the same mix of darkness and cynicism that
typifies noir. Noir seems t be about a sustained
mood in a way that some hardboiled isn't.

I'd be interested in hearing thoughts on this.
