This is going out a bit on an intellectual limb, but the
element of jazz
that's most often mentioned as its vitalizing spark is
improvisation.
Correspondingly, literary PIs have to fly by the seat of
their pants
from time to time--follow their instincts, that hunch or gut
feeling.
