I wanted to reccomend what I think is one of the best new books of
the year. This book is called Saguaro Riptide, and the author is a new comer
novelist Norman Partridge.
This book is written in an ironic style that has been compared to
other writers like Elmore Leonard and Ross Thomas. I never like Ros Thomas
much, but I like Elmore Leonard, and I think the writing in this book is
better than that of Elmore Leonard.
The book is about a boxer named Jack "Baddle Ax" Baddalach, who has
lost his last fight and is asked to become a sort of Mafia detective for
Freddy G, the local Don. His first assign ment is to find two million dollars
that was misshandled by a man named Komoko. Komoko was last seen in Pipeline
Beach, Arizona, in a motel called Saguaro Riptide.
The book features a whacky cast of characters such as Kate Benteen,
who basically has "been there, done that" for a number of jobs ranging from
Movie star to Doctor to War Hero. Another one is a hitman named Woodrow Saad
Muhammad, a hit man hired by a boxing promoter to kill Jack. But Woodrow
develops multiple half way through the book. And there is a lesbian sherrif
whose name is Wyetta Earp......... Need I say more.
The novel also has so much atmosphere that I actually thought I was
in Arizona sometimes. And the writing is crisp and cool.
Over all, this is a really good book and I reccomend it highly
