RARA-AVIS: AMC; Gary Phillips; PIES

Gary Warren Niebuhr (piesbook@execpc.com)
Sat, 04 Oct 1997 09:19:32 -0700 I don't want to take any time talking to this listserve because I am too
busy taping and watching all the great films on AMC this weekend. Some I
have seen, some I have not, but what a great series either way. Hope all
of you can take advantage of this weekend offering of noir, noir, noir.

>and my great good buddy, Gary Phillips from LA,
who has the Ivan Monk PI series (the first, VIOLENT SPRING is in
paperback and about the LA riots after Rodney King--good stuff).

I am re-reading Violent Spring right now. It is not really all that
hardboiled, but it is a remarkably well structured and well written P. I.
novel. I approached this one with caution because it was published by a
small press, and sometimes the quality of the writing is not all that it
should be. But, the writing here is wonderful, as is the use of LA as a
setting.

I am re-reading this book because Gary Phillips is on a panel I am doing at
B'con'97 in Monterey. For those of you who are going, the panel is a two
part deal. Part One is Thursday at 3 pm and is called Setting Up Office in
California: the PI Finds A Home. It will feature me talking about
Chandler, Marv Lachman talking about Pronzini/Nameless, Ted Fitzgerald
talking about Ross Macdonald, and George Easter talking about Walter
Moseley. Part Two is on Saturday at 4:30 and it features Gary Phillips,
Janet Dawson, Joe Gores and Robert Crais. This panel will deal with how
each of these authors uses CA as a setting for their PI novels.

Once again I am making an offer for anyone on the list to e-mail me if they
want to try their hand at the PI trivia panel. We are making up teams of
players and the game is kind of structured like Jeopardy, execpt no
individual need answer a question, rather the teams will consult. So far I
have Maggie Mason, Willetta Heisling, Susan Eggers, Ted Hertel and Sara
Paretsky. Yes, the first lady of PIs is playing the game. Any takers?

>check out Gary
Neibaur's P.I.E.S. site he deals with Private Eyes only.

Despite the spelling, I want to thank Mari for the plug. You can find me
by clicking on the signature below. For those of you following my
struggles to finish the listings, I believe I now have the "K" authors up!
Best, GWN.
