RARA-AVIS: LA Confidential

Thu, 18 Sep 1997 23:57:24 -0400 (EDT) Just got back from a special free screening of L.A. Confidential, attended
by Ellroy himself as well as the film's director (whose name is escaping
me). Ellroy was half hilarious, half annoyingly self-important. The movie,
however, rules. It's stunning. Amazingly complex and engaging characters
and a plot that is multi-layered yet amazingly easy to follow. Great
dialogue, great shoot-outs, and the scariest guy-in-a-dark-and-smelly-
basement scene I've ever seen. I think I shouted "Oh my God" out loud at
one point, along w/ dozens of other people. Spacey and especially Russell
Crowe are perfect, and Kim Basinger is surprisingly (really surprisingly,
since I usually can't stand her work) good. A great movie-going
experience. Please see it.
