RARA-AVIS: Hunter and Thompson

Levin, Doug (DLEVIN@DIRECTIMPACT.COM)
Tue, 19 Aug 1997 16:32:05 -0400 Both reading selections this week seemed on the far side of gimmicky.
Gimmicks aside, Thompson managed to catch that feverish feeling of panic
and claustrophobia.

SLIGHT STORY SPOILER BELOW

A word on the Hunter: I don't know Hunter much at all (no 87th Precinct
under my belt)--maybe only the screenplay to _The Birds_. I thought the
opening prose was really bad--but then I wondered if this was a strategy
of the story. I found the goodwill of the protagonist cloying and
wished, like the other characters, that he would shut up. The ending
seemed not just to kill off the protagonist, but to put an end to his
mode of cliched, jolly language. For those who know Hunter/McBain, does
this reading make sense or does he genuinely tend toward the
sentimental?
