It's apparently one of the most nihilistic books ever written. Hoke kills his two daughters and I think fails in trying to kill his wife and her new husband, and at the end sits and waits for the police to come. It was too much for his publisher (who'd wanted another Hoke story, though Willeford didn't want to do a series), and in the end Willeford did up a more normal sequel. I think that's about right; that's what I've picked up. I bet some people here have read it. : By the way, in Andrew Davie's original note, he doesn't mention _New : Hope for the Dead_, making four Moseley books by my count. Am I : correct? Yup. : I've never tried any of Willeford's books outside this series. : Which would you recommend? Everything I've read has been great, and I'm even turning into a completist. Some of his earlier ones are tough to get, but you'd probably like anything you can find. He's a very good writer and has a really sharp eye. I was lucky enough to get _Cockfighter Journal_ and _A Guide for the Undehemorrhoided_, both of which had very limited printings, which cover his time on the filming of _Cockfighter_ (the Allman Brothers band dropped by one day, so did Jimmy Carter) and his time in hospital for a painful (and expensive) operation. They're short and to the point, full of his wit and style. Apparently he was a wonderful fellow, too.
